What does the map show?

The map looks distinct with its black and white expression of the Ottawa city during 1639. It is a wonderful capture of the bird’s view angle that provides a view of Ottawa from 1876, till 1867 - when the city became the capital of what was then known as the Dominion of Canada.

A prominent feature of the map is the Ottawa River, that flows from right to left, cuts through the centre of the picture and separates the City of Hull in the Quebec province. The Parliament occupies a prominent position at the centre of the picture.

One can easily spot the Rideau Canal on the poster. It starts just to the left of the parliament buildings with an impressive flight of eight locks and heads off in a south-westerly direction for 202 kilometres, ending up at Kingston on Lake Ontario.

By the year 1876, Ottawa’s population spurred by its designation as Canada’s capital reached nearly 25,000. Today the demographic statistics of the city has reached 1 million. The poster also shows Ottawa and Hull that are very much lumber towns even today.

As shown on the poster, the Ottawa city of 1876 to how it is today, comes to a huge difference. Today, it is cleaner, orderly, attractive and a relatively prosperous city.
