About Lake Erie
Lake Erie is the shallowest and smallest by volume lake of the Great Lakes and therefore also has the shortest average water residence time. It is situated on the International Boundary between Canada and the United States and is bounded by Ontario and Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York on its western, southern, and eastern shores.
The industrial economy of the lakeshore area depends heavily upon water transportation. The steel industry also depends upon the movement of iron ore and limestone across the Great Lakes to Lake Erie ports. But the intense pollution of the lake resulted in the closing of many beaches and resorts near the lake.
