About Lake Nipigon
Lake Nipigon is the largest lake entirely within the boundaries of Ontario. With a surface area of 4,848 km2 (1,872 sq mi) and surface elevation of 260 m (850 ft), Lake Nipigon is also a part of the Great Lake drainage basin. It drains into the Nipigon River and thence into Nipigon Bay of Lake Superior. Both the lake and the river are the largest tributaries of Lake Superior. This lake is also known for its towering cliffs and unusual green-black sand beaches composed of the fine particles of a dark green mineral called pyroxene.
