About Lake Superior
Lake Superior is the largest of the Great Lakes of North America. It is also the world's largest freshwater lake by surface area which is 31,700 sq mi (82,100 km2) and the third largest freshwater lake by volume which is 2,900 cu mi (12,000 km3). The lake has the highest elevation of all five great lakes and drains into the St. Mary's River.
It is bounded by Ontario and Minnesota to the north and the states of Wisconsin and Michigan to the south.
The lake was named gichi-gami (meaning great sea) by the Ojibwe. The French explorers approaching the great inland sea during the 17th century referred the lake as "le lac supérieur" (meaning upper lake). It also came to be known as Lac Tracy by 17th century Jesuit missionaries. Finally the British named the lake as Lake Superior after taking the control of the region from the French in the 1760s following the French and Indian War.
