About Walkerton Ontario

The community of Walkerton in Ontario is located within and governed by the municipality of Brockton. It is the county seat of Bruce County and a site of Brockton's municipal offices. As of 2011, Walkerton covers a total area of 8.74 km2 (3.37 sq mi) and has a population of 4,967.

History

Walkerton was never incorporated as a village, it became a town in 1871. Originally a part of Brant County, Walkerton was first settled in 1849 by William Jasper and Edward Boulton. They farmed to the east of the river. Other settlers who farmed to the west of the river include John Lundy, Moses Stewart, and Thomas Bilkie.

None of them is credited as the founder of Walkerton. This title is offered to Joseph Walker who arrived from Ireland in 1850. He surveyed the area into a town plot, built saw and flour mills, and encouraged businesses to locate here. He was elected the first mayor or Walkerton.
