About Postal Codes

The Greater Ottawa area is smaller than that of the Ottawa–Gatineau census metropolitan area (CMA), which is 6,287 km2 (2,427 sq mi) in size. Ottawa–Gatineau is the only CMA in the nation to fall within two provinces. Ottawa is where the system of postal codes was first introduced. Before the framework came into being, large cities were often divided into postal zones or postal districts, which were numbered from 1 upwards within each city. A Canadian postal code is a code of letters and digits that are incorporated in a postal address. The purpose of these postal codes is to aid the sortation of mails. For instance, the name, address, destination written on letters or packages are meant to assist in efficient delivery to that location. Ottawa’s postal codes are formulated like K0A, K0A 1K0, K0A 1W0, etc. For Gatineau, the postal codes are structured like J8L 0A2, J8L 1A1, J8L 1A2, etc.
