About New South Wales
The state of New South Wales is bordered by Queensland to the north, South Australia to the west, Victoria by the south and the Tasman Sea to the east. It also borders two separate administered entity of the Australian Capital Territory and the Jervis Bay Territory.
Founded in 1788, this state originally comprised more than half of the Australian mainland including the island territories of New Zealand, Van Diemen's Land, Lord Howe Island, and Norfolk Island. It was during the 19th century that most of the colony's area was detached to form separate British colonies. Today New South Wales is Australia's most populous state and its largest cities are Sydney, Newcastle, and Wollongong.
