The British Cartographic Society (BCS) is an association of individuals and organisations dedicated to exploring and developing the world of maps. The organization has mapping companies, publishers, designers, academics, researchers, map curators, individual cartographers, GIS specialists and anyone with an interest in maps.

The British Cartographic Society was founded in 28th September 1963 and is often regarded as one of the world’s leading cartographic societies with its main publication, The Cartographic Journal, is recognised internationally. It promotes all aspects of cartography to a wide range of potential users. One of the aims of the Society is to encourage better mapping by providing medals and prizes to individuals or companies who have shown excellence in this field.


Ordnance Survey was the first national mapping agency in the United Kingdom. The agency roots back to 1747, when the compilation of a map of the Principal Triangulation of Great Britain (1783 – 1853) led to the creation of the Ordnance Survey. The agency essentially covers the island of Great Britain. The agency is one of the world’s largest producers of maps. Ordnance Survey maps remain in copyright for fifty years after their publication.

Ordnance Survey Mapping is usually classified as either “large-scale” or “small-scale”. The Survey’s large-scale mapping comprises 1:2,500 maps for urban areas and 1:10,000 more generally. These large scale maps are typically used in professional land-use contexts and were available as sheets until they were digitised.

Often considered to be one of the best sources of geospatial data in Great Britain. Its data supports essentially any industry that is associated with maps: urban planning, real estate development, environmental science, utilities, retail, and much more.


The United Kingdom Space Agency is an executive agency of the Government of the United Kingdom, responsible for the United Kingdom’s civil space programme.

Established on April 1st 2010 to replace the British National Space Centre, the agency took over the responsibility for government policy and key budgets for space exploration, and represents the United Kingdom in all negotiations on space matters. The agency brings together all UK civil space activities under one single management. Improving coordination of UK efforts in fields such as Earth science, telecoms and space exploration is what forms the core focus of the organization. It is based in Swindon, Wiltshire.

The agency was founded in 1835 and is headquartered in Nottingham, United Kingdom. Often regarded as the world’s oldest national geological survey and the United Kingdom’s premier centre for earth science information and expertise. It is responsible for advising the UK government on all aspects of geoscience as well as providing impartial geological advice to industry, academia and the public.
