Designed by the best cartographers of National Geographic, the Map of Oregon presents rich imagery of the State’s diverse terrain. The unique merger of land features like the rugged mountain ranges, the coastal region and the high deserts is represented with shaded relief and wrinkled folds.

The Crater Lake, Columbia River, Snake River, Mount Hood, Columbian Plateau, Cascade Range, Klamath and Blue Mountains can be easily placed on the frame. The state capital Salem and other primary and secondary towns are labeled with clarity. Political boundary with other states is depicted with contrasting color tones and can be identified at a glance.

The Columbia River, the largest river in Pacific Northwest region, makes the northern border of the state and separates the land area from Washington. Snake River makes the eastern border of the state separating the land area from Idaho. California and Nevada form the southern boundary with the state. Pacific Ocean can be placed on the western side of the state.

    The State of Oregon follows two time zones. Most of the state falls under the Pacific time Zone and follows the Pacific Standard Time (PST) which is 8 hours behind Greenwich mean time. A small portion of the state near Idaho border falls under the Mountain Time Zone and observes the Mountain Standard Time (MST) which is 7 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time.

Multnomah is the most populous county and Harney is the largest county in terms of land area. Physical Features

  • Coast Range Geographic Region

    The Coast Range runs from north to south of the Pacific Ocean. This geographical region holds low mountain ranges and evergreen forests. The Coast Range is subdivided into three main sections, namely northern, central and southern. Mary’s Peak located in the central part is the highest peak of this region. The Columbia River makes the northern boundary of this region. In the southern section the Coquille River can be seen dividing the Coast Range from the Klamath Mountains.

  • Willamette Valley Geographic Region

    Willamette Valley is a narrow strip of land to the east of the Coast Range along the Willamette River. The Willamette River flows through the entire valley and is surrounded by Cascade Range, Coast Range and Calapooya Mountains.

  • The Cascade Mountain Geographical Region

    The Cascade Mountains provide a rugged landscape and hold the State's highest Mount Hood. Many lakes can also be found in this region the most famous being the Crater Lake which is the deepest lake of United States.

  • Klamath Mountain Geographical Region

    This region is located in the southwest corner of Oregon. This region has 11 wilderness areas which extend over Oregon and California. The main rivers that flow through this region within the state are Klamath River and Rogue River.

  • Columbia Plateau Geographical Region

    This region covers most of eastern Oregon. The Blue Mountains and the Wallowa Mountains rise in the northeastern part of this region. The major cities located in the Columbia Plateau are Hermiston, Hood River, Pendleton, The Dalles and Milton-Freewater.

  • Basin and Range Geographical Region

    This region is located in the southeastern part of Oregon. This region is marked by steep mountains, desserts and high basins. The High desert lies south of the Blue Mountains in the central and eastern part of the state. The high desert is named as such for its generally high elevation. The Blue Mountain is also located in this geographical region. This ecoregion consists of many basins and mountain regions.

National Parks

Crater Lake is the only National Park of Oregon’s. However the unique terrain embodies 5 national park sites which include John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, Oregon Caves National Monument, Lewis and Clark National Historical Park and the McLoughlin House. The state also encompasses 11 Natural Landmarks and 17 Historic Landmarks.
