The city of London in southwestern Ontario has a population of 383,822 according to the 2016 Canadian census. It is a separated municipality, politically separate from Middlesex County, though it remains the county seat. Also, the city has grown to be the largest Southwestern Ontario municipality and Canada's 11th largest metropolitan area.
London is also a regional center of healthcare and education and hosts a number of musical and artistic exhibits and festivals.
The city lies at the confluence of the Thames River, approx 200 km (120 mi) from both Toronto and Detroit. This river dominates London's geography. Its north and south meet at the center of the city at a location known as "The Forks" or "The Fork of the Thames." The location of the city at the junction of Highway 401 and 402 connects it to Toronto, Windsor, and Sarnia.
