This visual organizer portrays the political and physical geography of the Southeastern region of the United States with accuracy and preciseness. The map feature includes boundaries of each state with placement of provincial capitals and major cities.     The Southeastern region of the United States is bordered to the north by the states of Kentucky and Virginia. Missouri can be placed on the north western corner. Arkansas can lie to the west whereas Louisiana borders the region to the southwest and south. Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean bind this sector to the south and south east and east respectively.

  • Population Concentration

    The most populous state in the region is Florida with a population of approximately 20,612,439, followed by Georgia and North Carolina.

  • Major Cities and Metropolitans

    Jacksonville is the most populous city of Florida as well as the most populous city in the southeastern region of the United States. The other major cities of the region include Charlotte in North Carolina, Nashville and Memphis in Tennessee and Atlanta in Georgia. The largest metropolitan area is South Florida followed by Metro Atlanta and Tampa Bay Area on the west coast of Florida.

  • Time Zone

    The Southeastern geographical region of the United States falls under two different time zones namely the Eastern Time Zone and Central Time Zone.

      Eastern Time Zone: Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, most of Florida and the eastern part of Tennessee fall under the Eastern Time Zone and observes the Eastern Standard Time (EST) which is 5 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time.

      Central Time Zone: The states of Alabama, Mississippi, western part of Tennessee and the panhandle of Florida in the northwestern side fall under the Central Time Zone. Four and follow the Central Standard Time (CST) which is 6 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time.

  • Physical Features of the Region

    The Gulf of Mexico can be placed on the south and Atlantic Ocean form the southeastern and eastern coast of this region. Prominent mountain features include the Appalachian ranges, Great Smoky Mountains, The Blue Ridge Mountain and the Black Mountains. Mount Mitchell is the highest peak of the Appalachian region and is located in the state of North Carolina.

    The Piedmont plateau dominates the central part between the Atlantic coastal plains and the Appalachian Mountain ranges. The Mississippi River is the longest river of this region and empties into the Gulf of Mexico. Big Black River, Pearl River, Chattooga River, Carolina bay, estuaries, salt marshes and sand hills are other significant physical attributes of this region.
