Physical Features

Water bodies in this region include Strait of Juan De Fuca, Wynoochee River, Elwha River and Big Quilcene River and many others.

  • The Coast Range

    The Coast Range can be placed in the south western corner of the state extending south into the state of Oregon. The most notable feature of this region is the Willapa Hills overlooking the Willapa Bay. It is bounded by the Pacific Ocean in the west and Cascade range to the east. Columbia River can be placed on the south and Olympic Mountains to the north. Rivers that can be found in this region include Chehalis River, Willapa River. River,Bear River and Grays River.

  • The Puget Sound Lowlands

    The Puget Sound Lowlands lie east of Olympic Mountains and west of Cascade Range. Puget Bay extends south in Washington and north into the Canadian province of British Columbia. Major cities and industrial areas of the state can be found in the Puget Sound lowlands. State capital Olympia and the urban settlement of Tacoma can be placed in this region. Puget Sound is connected to the Pacific ocean in the north by Strait of Juan de Fuca.

  • Cascade Mountains

    The Cascade mountains are marked by many volcanic peaks. It is located east of Puget Sound Lowlands and encompasses the highest elevation of the state, Mount Rainier. Mount St Helens, Mount Adams, Mount Baker and Glacier Peak are other prominent features of this region.

  • The Columbia Plateau

    Most of the southern and central part of Washington State is covered by the Columbian Plateau. This region is also known as the Columbian basin as it is drained by the Columbia River. The region is characterized by steep river canyons, Coulees, scablands and tall ridges. Grand Coulee and Moses Coulee are the notable features of this region. The rolling hills of Palouse Country provide a deep fertile soil that supports much of Washington's wheat farming. The Blue Mountains can also be placed in this region.

  • The Rocky Mountains

    The Washington Rocky Mountains are also known as the Columbia mountains. They run across Washington State in its northwestern corner. The Columbia river and its tributary Okanogan River cut many ridges along the mountain ranges. This region is rich in mineral deposit and is mined for copper, gold silver limestone lead and zinc.

National Parks

Washington State is home to three National Parks which are Mount Rainier National Park, North Cascade National Park and Olympic National Park. All the parks are captioned and can be easily placed on the frame.
