About Bird migration and their epic journeys
Migratory birds undertake their thousand-mile flights for millennia to experience mesmerizing journeys. Different types of birds take routes of widely varying lengths. Where some take round-trip migrations as long as 44,000 miles while others take much shorter trips. Some birds even migrate on foot while others cover thousands of miles and move back and forth between continents. Migration is the regular seasonal movement that happens mostly in the north and south between breeding and wintering grounds. Undertaken by many seasonal species of birds, these movements are largely made in response to changes in food availability, habitat, or weather.
Migration strategies
Roughly half of the world’s bird species migrate. Out of that multitude of 14, many birds take migration in the Western Hemisphere—evoking the waves of birds that flow over and around us with each passing season. Migration is controlled primarily by changes in day length and migratory birds navigate using celestial cues from the sun and stars, the earth's magnetic field, and mental maps.
