About Fort Frances Ontario

Located in the Rainy River District, Fort Frances is the third-largest community in Northwestern Ontario after Thunder Bay and Kenora. It is a popular fishing destination and hosts the annual Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship. The biggest employer of this town has been the Fort Frances Mill until its closure in January 2014.

This town was the first European settlement west of Lake Superior. It was established by a French Canadian Pierre Gaultier de Varennes, Sieur de La Vérendrye, the first commander of the western district.
