About Chibougamau
The town of Chibougamau in Central Quebec is located on Lake Gilman. It is completely surrounded by, but not part of, the Municipality of Baie-James. Due to a remote location, Chibougamau provides services for a few smaller communities surrounding it and for the regional resource-based industries. It is accessed by Route 167 from Lac-Saint-Jean and by Route 113 from Lebel-Sur-Quevillon.
History
Chibougamau has long been part of the Cree territory. The French explorers in the early 17th century came to the Lake Chibougamau area, after which the town is named. However, till that time there were no permanent European settlements in the region.
It was only until gold was discovered in the region in 1903. The area then attracted many mining prospectors. But because of the difficulty in access, no lasting development took place at that time.
In 1949, copper was first exploited in the region which led to the opening of a multi-metallic mine in the area and a permanent community was established in 1952. The town is now known as the mining town and is also a center of large logging and sawmill industry.
