About Turner Valley
The town of Turner Valley in the Calgary, Alberta is located 3 km (1.9 mi) west of Black Diamond and approx 60 km (37 mi) southwest of Calgary. The oilfields of this town were a major supplier of oil and gas and the largest producer in the British Empire for around 30 years.
History
A rancher from Okotoks named W. Stewart Herron gathered a few investors from local luminaries to drill Turner Valley's fossil-fuel that was some 800 meters underground. He recruited drilling expert Archibald Dingman, who in 1914 struck wet natural gas - which produced gasoline.
However, the main buildings were burned to the ground in 1920 and they could not afford to rebuild and operate the site. Later the Imperial Oil bought Calgary Petroleum Products to rebuilt the plant.
The Turner Valley Oilfield Society is now accepted as part of the group of historic sites.
