About Havelock Ontario
The village of Havelock amalgamated into the Belmont and Methuen Township to form what is now Havelock-Belmont-Methuen in 1988. This new township is located in the Central-Eastern Ontario in Peterborough County. It has a total land area of 542.73 km2 (209.55 sq mi) and a population density of 8.3/km2 (21/sq mi).
History
Before the amalgamation, the Belmont and Methuen Township were surveyed in 1823. And Havelock was incorporated as an independent village in 1892. It was named after the British general, Sir Henry Havelock.
The early settlers in this region built their homes in an area of dense forests within the rocky Canadian Shield and survived on fishing, logging, and farming.
Early businesses in the community included a post office, store, bakery, a blacksmith, and millinery all located south of the current village. The Canadian Pacific Railway was surveyed in 1881 to find a right-of-way through the area north of Havelock. And exactly a year after that the rails were laid, surveyed and filled the swampy land to make room for a larger village. The current village of Havelock was incorporated in 1892.
